My new attempt at inner peace is cheesy Christmas Songs. My kids are kind of music snobs and we have a hard time agreeing on what can go on the radio. Country songs hurt M's classical ears. Classic Rock doesn't always have the best lyrics for K and C's inquiring minds. And Barney gets new and interesting lyrics from the boys. P's NPR creates moans from the children. So when the chatter, the whining, the arguing in the car muddles my brain I like to threaten to turn on the radio.
For some reason, cheesy Christmas Songs doesn't bother anyone but me. So riding in the car this time of the year tends to be joyous. Every one singing, yelling out this is my favorite, creates better times.
Recently, Feed the World was playing. Recently is relative. This is one of the songs that get way over played and drives me a little batty. Anyway, I thought I heard sirens and turned off the radio to hear, "Free the squirrels", belting out of C's mouth. No sirens just a sweet girls singing along to wanting to free the squirrels in time for Christmas. If you ask her about this now she'll swear she didn't say, "Free the squirrels" although the whole car heard. She insists she was singing, "Pizza swirl". So now I look forward to my new carol. The past few days I've put on tons of mileage running everyone here and there. We had 5 dental appointments to add to the regular mix.
My dear friend and teacher for Franciscans died and her funeral was yesterday. K wanted to attend the funeral with me. We had a 24 mile ride there so she read to me what she was missing in class on the way there. On the way back, she asked if we could sing Christmas songs. I went to turn on the radio and she said let's just sing them ourselves. We had a grand time. I was amazed at how many songs she knew and knew well. My favorite was, "Fleas not me dod". (Feliz Navidad). Afterward on her own, she asked me to interpret and teach her how to say it right. Darn. Turning off the freeway on our way back to school, we decided to see if we could get back before ending The Twelve Days of Christmas. Boy did we have fun. We would stretch the 5 Golden Rings to where the cars next to us thought maybe there were sirens. K's favorite part was when I had my blooper.... Eight Maids-a-mating. She called my mom and dad and told them last night.
Only two more weeks until I need to find other ways to keep the peace in the car.

First, I just have to ask what you were doing up so early this morning!
Love the songs--I have fond memories of singing in the car on many family vacations.
I won't be able to hear feed the world the same now.
I so agree with Jane!!! What the heck are you doing up at that hour??? How fitting this topic was after last night's competition at the book party!! You DO know your Christmas carol's and are a force to be reckoned with! Beautiful story and yes...fond memories. Love you, dear friend.
